Why is it such a big deal that the U.S. calls football soccer?


The name association football was coined to distinguish the game from the other forms of football played at the time, specifically rugby football. The term soccer originated in England, first appearing in the 1880s as a slang abbreviation of the word "association", often credited to former England captain Charles Wreford-Brown.|||People from all over the world use different words all the time. It just seems that some people can't grow up and accept this fact in regards to "football" being called "soccer".





This argument is really old, people need to drop this middle school drama and GROW UP!!!!!








USA is not the only country that refers to "football" as "soccer". Several of countries do! Why is it that USA is the only country called out on it?

Most countries even refer to the sport as "soccer" from time to time!|||i personally have no problem with people calling soccer different names but then a gain i'm a little bias since i do live in the US|||the US already has a football an it is more popular in the US then soccer if they were to change the names to make them right (I think they should since you don't play american football with your feet) it would cause another civil war in America|||i really don't care. It's just like how Americans say fanny for the backside, and Brits say fanny for the vagina.|||I think the problem is that Americans think that the sports name is soccer. It's not, it's called football. Maybe the American game should be called by its slang name (gridiron). Let's face it soccer is only a term used for the sport in the colonies. The WORLD knows the game as FOOTBALL.|||There have been over more recent years a push to use the common name to establish a uniformity of names. One example is Australia, as part of Oceania the head body was Soccer Australia. As part of a restructure and moving into the Asian Confederation they were not forced but it was a polite request that Soccer be dropped, thus the head body is now FFA (Football Federation Australia).





FIFA would prefer that Football become the world wide reference but it is not anything that officially concerns anyone except maybe a few in the marketing department.





It does seem to raise the ire of a few fans in some traditional countries that play the sport but I will never understand why.
