Why do so many americans play for the canadian football association?

Were they not good enought for the NFL? What is the difference between the skill levels of the players|||The Canadian Football League limits the number of American players to half of their teams rosters, currently 21. American players are called "imports".

With 8 teams, that means no more than 168 Americans can be in the league at one time. The average player salary is less than the NFL minimum.

The overall skill levels between the CFL and the NFL are significant. A lot of marginal NFL players have played in the CFL. And, as others have posted, some signed with NFL teams and had great careers.

There is a lot of coaches movement between the 2 leagues as well. And some college coaches get experience in the CFL. Two of the more respected NFL head coaches previously coached championship CFL teams, Bud Grant and Marv Levy., |||Were they not good enought for the NFL?

^^ that's exactly correct. they weren't good enough for the nfl, but they still want to make money playing the sport they love. and there have been a few instances were players in the CFL have been picked up by the NFL and have even won in the superbowl.|||Exactly... they weren't good enough for the NFL.|||they washed out of the nfl and have no other career to fall back on.colleges passed them just because they could play sports and not study|||There is a ton of talent here in the USA, who are just a notch or 2 below NFL caliber. There are a finite number of NFL roster spots. College players that can't break into the NFL but want to continue playing football can often do so in the CFL.

Overall the skill levels between NFL and CFL are huge.|||1. DO NOT CLICK ON SHARI's LINK. It is a browser hijack mal ware site.

2. Are you referring to the Canadian Football league? There is a Canadian football association and it has nothing to do with the sport of north American football.|||Usually it's because they are not BIG enough for the NFL but they certainly have the skills required.

The USA is more of a football place than Canada is.

So, it's kind of like why all the American hockey players are Canadian, European or Russian. Except it's not about size, it's just that there isn't much ice time to be had for the youth of most of the USA, but up in Canada, we all get icetime for at least half the year from childhood forward. lol|||first of all its the Canadian football League not what you said

second there not big enough a lot of great players played in the CFL : Doug Flutie,Jeff Garcia,Joe Horn,Terell Suggs,Andre Rison,Ricky WIlliams, and Mike Vanderjagt. just to name a few|||They are playing for the Canadian league because that was their choice just like NFL Europe, the are helping to spread American football. You will also find out that there are less loud mouths and show-offs in the other two leagues. Also the salaries are much better across the board|||It's the same reason that there are so many American players playing basketball overseas and getting rich at the same time.

Tell me what you think!|||player discipline is very important in any sport. anybody would like to see the highest levels of professionalism and sportsmanship. players should be mindful of their conduct to ensure that they behave at their utmost best.

now we all know that there are numerous circumstances that can cause a player to lose discipline. people make infractions intentionally and intentionally, hence a good disciplinary system in place should be able to sufficiently deal with the erring player.

without a proper system, people will be baying for blood, and i think, this is unfair to the player. i am never a believer of trial by publicity.

i may have an opinion, but as i said, a good disciplinary system in place should be able to deal with cases conclusively. we need to be rational and logical, not emotional, especially if people's careers are on the line.|||Well in a way they should because they are often looked up at by younger children especially aspiring footballers. So they should be banned if they are encouraging any negative behavior.

However they shouldn't be punished for doing what they want to do, just because they are in the public eye doesn't mean they have to be perfect all the time, its impossible.

But overall i would say that they should be suspended/|||no

Should Dundee United have made an official complaint to the Scottish Football Association?

Will this open the floodgates to similar complaints? For example, Rangers might have complained over Scott MacDonald's goal being allowed, St. Mirren might have complained over the Nakamura free kick or Aberdeen over the Zander Diamond goal which was disallowed.

Is it reasonable to expect referees to do their job in this kind of environment?|||I think united are correct to complain. You would forgive mccurry for missing one blatant incident but to miss 3 possibly 4 is ridiculous and clearly he was too scared to do anything and not for the first time reffing a rangers game. Nothing will happen with united's complaint as Gordon smith has already whitewashed it. Thought smith would be a good chief executive but he has been a fecking joke. I agree Celtic have had some doubious descision but the Aberdeen one I'm going to disagree with. The ref blew the whistle before diamond scored so obviously everyone stopped. Secondly samaras had 2 goals disallowed in that game with at least 1 being miles onside. When Celtic won 5-1 at pittodrie, Jvoh was hauled down for a stonewall penalty and also samaras brought down when clean through yet defender only booked. Clear case of ref being sympathetic.|||Would it make a difference, they sit in Glasgow.|||No they shouldn't.

Every team has had decisions that have gone against them this season and generally on more than one occassion but you don't see them throwing their dummy out of the pram and behaving like a 2 year old having a temper tantrum.I bet they wouldn't have complained if he had made mistakes in their favour though.

Referees make mistakes some good some bad but if they didn't what would we have to complain about.|||Yes they should it's been going on for too long now it's time attention was drawn to it from all the people involved in Scottish football. I agree with what your saying in that refs have a difficult enough job to do without this being a factor and i respect that however, Celtic and Rangers are are dominant enough in the spl without needing the help of refs that cant handle the pressure and bottle decisions because of fans and media.

If they decisions had went the other way imagine the furor in the press and media the guy's life wouldn't be worth living! In a way change would benefit everyone! the old firm could believe they won the league by merit and we could all play on a level playing field!

Short term pain for long term gain - Even some old firm fans would admit it going on all too often|||OK things didn't go according to plan..but every team must have grievances about decisions not going their way..where would it all end|||If that is the case then celtic would be deducted at least 9 points lol.

they cant don't anything about it now but they should look at the standard of refereeing for the future

Has an association football game ever been played at Twickenham?

Has the Football Association's obsession with money-making debased its very own FA Cup Final?

It makes me so angry that Kenco coffee comes out of my ears.|||No not anymore, managers pick a 25 man squad and should be allowed to pick any of those 25 men, he has picked his 25 best so the manager has the right to pick who he wants. Also if your referring to Fergie this weekend then to be honest he has earned the right to pick any team he wants, he has wrapped up the league and won't want key players getting injured before the Barca game. The managers should run the club, not the FA, not the chairman, not the players, so the manager should have total control over who he picks and not get punished for it.|||Why ??

Each team names a 25 man squad so why do that if you can't use them ?

Whoever gets relegated tomorrow is being relegated for performances over the course of the whole season , not just one day .

New to Association Football (soccer), and need to know some basics?

I'm getting into watching Football, but really I know nothing about it, I don't have a team I follow yet (probably going to be Mexico), and let alone know the rules.

What are some basics you could tell me, anything really. One thing I was wondering was how do you go about picking what team to follow, what's the difference (if any) between Major League Soccer, a National team, and any other levels that there might be.|||The team you decide to cheer for is not something that you can really pick consciouslly.. it's more like a feeling of or something like that. The difference between Major League Soccer (MLS) and National Team is simple... The MLS is like the NBA or the NFL. Meanwhile, the National Team, is like the Dream Team (relating it to the NBA), where only players who have US Citizenship can be elected. There are many "levels" in soccer, for example, women and men soccer. Then, there are categorizations by age limit mostly, like Under 21 (it means only players who are younger than 21yrs can play), Under 20, Under 17, and many more. Speaking of the rules, you can find a whole bunch of information on the internet, just type "Soccer Rules" on any search engine and you'll get what you are looking for. My advice is to watch as many games as possible so you can get familiar with the terms involved! Hope this helps!

What is the first association football or soccer club to have the label olympique in their name?

Always change the coach is likely to confuse the players.

Do you agree with me?|||Don't forget the match scandal controversy in the domestic league, which damaged the stocking of the roster for the national team. Like with Team USA, the federation is banking on a jolt to the coaching staff to spark play on the pitch; this can be a huge roll of the dice.

A football field is the playing surface for the game of football. Its dimensions and markings are defined by Law 1 of the Laws of the Game, "The Field of Play".

Standard pitch measurements (Click here to see imperial version)All line markings on the pitch form part of the area which they define. For example, a ball on or over the touchline is still on the field of play; a ball on the line of the goal area is in the goal area; and a foul committed over the 16.5 metres (18-yard) line has occurred in the penalty area. Therefore a ball must wholly cross the touchline to be out of play, and a ball must wholly cross the goal line (between the goal posts) before a goal is scored; if any part of the ball is still on or over the line, the ball is still in play.

The field descriptions that apply to adult matches are described below. Note that due to the original formulation of the Laws in England and the early supremacy of the four British football associations within IFAB, the standard dimensions of a football pitch were originally expressed in imperial units. The Laws now express dimensions with approximate metric equivalents (followed by traditional units in brackets), though a popularity to use traditional units continues in some countries, especially in the British Isles.

[edit] Goals

Goals are placed at the center of each goal-line. These consist of two upright posts placed equidistant from the corner flagposts, joined at the top by a horizontal crossbar. The inner edges of the posts must be 7.32 metres (8 yds) apart, and the lower edge of the crossbar must be 2.44 metres (8 feet) above the ground. Nets are usually placed behind the goal, though are not required by the Laws.

Goalposts and crossbars must be white, and made of either wood or metal. Rules regarding the shape of goalposts and crossbars are somewhat more lenient, but they must conform to a shape that does not pose a threat to players.

A point (goal) is scored when the ball completely crosses the goal line between the goal-posts, even if a defending player last touched the ball before it crossed the goal line (see own goal). A goal may, however, be ruled illegal if the player who scored or a member of his team commits an offence under any of the Laws between the time the ball was previously out of play and the goal being scored.

[edit] Penalty and goal areas

Further information: Penalty area (provides expanded information on the role of the penalty area)

Two rectangular boxes are marked out on the pitch in front of each goal.

The goal area (colloquially "The 6 yard box"), consists of the area formed by the goal-line, two lines starting on the goal-line 5.5 metres (6 yds) from the goalposts and extending 5.5 metres (6 yds) into the pitch from the goal-line, and a line joining these. Goal kicks and any free kick by the defending team may be taken from anywhere in this area. Indirect free kicks awarded to the attacking team within the goal area must be taken from the point on the line parallel to the goal line nearest where an incident occurred; they can not be taken further within the goal-area. Similarly drop-balls that would otherwise occur in the goal area are taken on this line.

The penalty area (colloquially "The 18 yard box") is similarly formed by the goal-line and lines extending from it, however its lines commence 16.5 metres (18 yards) from the goalposts and extend 16.5 metres (18 yds) into the field. This area has a number of functions, the most prominent being to denote where the goalkeeper may handle the ball and where a foul by a defender, usually punished by a direct free kick, becomes punishable by a penalty kick.

The penalty mark (or "penalty spot") is immediately in the middle of, and 11 metres (12 yds) in front of, the goal; this is the point from where penalty kicks are taken. The penalty arc (colloquially "the D") is marked from the outside edge of the penalty area, 9.15 metres (10 yds) from the penalty mark; this marks an exclusion zone for all players other than the attacking kicker and the defending goalkeeper during a penalty kick.

[edit] Associated areas|||the size doesn't matter, as long as the dimensions are all within the same required ratio.

In association football (or soceer), can a goalie record a clean sheet even if their team loses in a shootout?

A game ends in a scoreless tie but is decided by a shootout. Does the losing goalkeeper still get a clean sheet? Could you show me some evidence from the rulebook or something?|||The official result of the game would be 0-0 with a footnote that Team A advances to the next round/wins championship 4-2 on Penalties. Given that, I would consider the keeper to have recorded a shutout. I would consider 'clean sheet' and 'shutout' the same thing. Others may not.|||Good question. It seems that it would be no, because a clean sheet is defined as, "Not letting anything into the goal". So, no, it would not be a clean sheet if you lost in PK.

How do I develop a passion for association football ( soccer)?

Playing it and watching it.

And how to get into soccer shape.|||that's a hard question...

i guess really it just comes as you learn to see it as a beautiful sport. you just start to like it the more you play and watch you, or you don't. i think the biggest thing for starters is to have fun when you play, and the rest will come.

to get into shape, a good suggestion is to start running everyday, and do some sprint training as well as start working on your technical skills such as passing, trapping, tackling, shooting, and dribbling|||Go for a specific team. Here in the US I go for La Galaxy. That way you get exited when your team scores. Watch European soccer, like leagues like La Liga, or Italian Serie A. They have really good teams. Playing it, buy a soccer ball, and practice with friends that know soccer. When you think you are good enough and know the most common techniques, get in a recreational team. To get into soccer shape, run A LOT!!! I run 10 miles a day now. Start with 1 mile a day, and try to make it in 6 minutes. To learn the rules buy a FIFA video game, Thats how I really learned the rules well, and it helps with complicated rules like offsides and stuff. When you play the video game don't skip anything, the vids and stuff.|||you will develop a passion for the game the more you play it, but it's not really something you can develop over night! Watching it will help you understand the game more and teach you things as well. To get in soccer shape you need to run about 4 miles every day, i wouldn't start out running that much, work up to 4 miles, but that should be your goal. Do sprints, push ups, and sit ups too. good luck!

yes hes a scapegoat for a crap performance by a bunch of crap players at hte world cup.|||Hey, you know how the English are. They are the biggest ******* on the planet ever since anybody can remember. I don't have anything against the English nor do I hate them, but that is how they act like, especially when it comes to football. They cannot admit that they don't have good quality players. If Barry is the one making things happen, then you know that they have a problem.|||Part of the coach's job is being the scapegoat when the proverbial hits the fan. Hell, it's probably actually written into his contract.

Do americans realise the World Cup is really the World Series of Association Football?

Not men playing rounders (baseball) or running around in body armour %26amp; helmets (US football) or even 7" 4' freaks throwing a ball through a hoop?|||I can tell you most of us don't follow it because every four years we are told that we should. Another answer is that our teams always suck and I'm pretty sure that most Americans won't root for anyone else. The game has never really taken root here. The the MLS is growing though so maybe in 20 years we'll give a rip. For right now it's pretty much the foreign born Americans and their kids that pay attention.

Plus we stole all our sports from others. Rounders (baseball), Rugby (American football)... we stole basketball from the indigenous South Americans. The only sport we really invented was volleyball. There are elements of tennis but it's a stretch.

I do LOVE Python. I grew up seeking A bit of Fry and Laurie whenever I could as well.

We borrow everything. We're only 200+ year old. We have nothing but hand-me downs. For some reason though soccer has never been one of the.|||1. yes. as an american, all of my friends and family are watching the world cup. we're just not as purely insane about it as the rest of the world.

2. your question isn't a question, you're just trying to make it sound like americans are oblivious to the rest of the world. which some are. but not all of us...

3. baseball,(gridiron) football, and basketball are all just as much sports as football/soccer. I don't see why the rest of the world is so butthurt just because we were innovative enough to come up with 3 national pastimes.. YES we play soccer/football, YES some of us like it, but not all. For someone who sounds prejudiced towards the USA for being ignorant, you're sounding pretty ignorant yourself.|||No I think the World cup is really the world cup of association football, baseball is not rounders, armor and helmets are for protection (wearing protection is never, ever a dumb choice, remember that kids) and 7 feet 4 people aren't freaks. They are humans just like you and I.

Alistair, below, is wrong about baseball. Google it.|||Do you "realise" you cant spell? And just because soccer (football as you lobsterbacks call it) is the only sport your God-forsaken country can compete with us in, doesn't mean you need to bash the sports that we play. And do you realize basketball, and baseball are in the olympics? And honestly, if you don't live here, don't open your mouth. You have no right to judge a country you don't know a Fu*k about, except for that they are the only superpower (a role we proudly took from you after WW2 :) :) hahahahahahaha) and do you realize that we tied your cocky soccer (football) team? Suck my d*ck|||LOLOL

I literally just described their sports the same as you only in another question

*EDIT* Btw...omfg Eric C are you stupid? Don't you "realise" that you are speaking the English language and THAT is how you spell "realise" in ENGLISH. Americans are the ones who changed it to "realize" so actually YOU are wrong. Learn to speak and spell the language correctly before you have a go at others|||anyone can say football is just men running around passing in a triangle and always flopping, as much as i love the sport... its true and fairly easy to pick out faults

so really, don't disrespect a sport..|||Does every non-American think they know everything and that all Americans know nothing?

I feel sorry for your family...|||You can pick out faults in any sport. That's exactly what you're asking for with this question.|||the world cup is everyone, the USA only play there other crappy sports by themselves|||Yea except the USA are the only country in the world that give a toss about baseball.|||the yanks are on a high, its been a while since they won something or even drew even

give them a break or they will start, killing english soldiers with there friendly fire|||Because.|||I believe they are busy munching off to pizza and other fatty food.|||World Cup is better|||Yes.|||What is your point?|||your mom.|||you brits are still mad you couldnt beat us i see? hhaaahahhahahah|||It's not that we don't know - it's that we don't care.

How to register a team at any Football Association (10 Points)?

So, I've collected more than 15 players. We made a team. We will still make t-shirts and rent a field for training and matches. I'm just wondering how can a team register at any football association, generally I mean.

And what is the minimum age of the coach? thanks|||Many adult leagues are sanctioned under the United States Adult Soccer Association via state associations. Many youth leagues are sanctioned by either US Youth Soccer or the American Youth Soccer Organization via state associations.

Do a web search to locate your states soccer association website, for example "Indiana state soccer association". If your team is composed of players under 20 years of age, then search for "Wyoming youth soccer".

Once you have located the correct site for your team, you will need to search the site for affiliated leagues in your area or try to contact them for current information. Some state sites are not kept up to date real well.

Coaching requirements will vary by league and age, so once you locate a league you will have to contact them for those specifics.

Why is a communist in charge of England's Football Association?

In 1970 Lord Triesman joined the Communist Party and he stayed in that party until the winter of 1976/1977, then rejoined the Labour party in 1977. He is the one who has done his best to humiliate our great legendary footballer , Gary Lineker? Is this evidence of the sinister tentacles of English politics into everything, even football? Is this typical Big Brother English politics? Lord Triesman has just resigned from running the Football Association after his communist corruption exposed. Why was it all hushed up?|||What ??????? . And who on earth rates Garly Lineker as a legendary footballer . We are just not good enough on the world stage and the sooner we realise this we may start performing better .|||because you touch yourself at night|||sing sing africa !

Which current association football teams are the most violent?

Which current national association football team is the most violent? Club team? Individual players?

Thanks!|||Almost all football clubs in Indonesia Super League and it getting worse on the lower leagues.

Can't believe it? Then you should come here and watch our league. Here players can tackle from behind, spitting, kicking and hit opponents, yelling and even pushing at the ref! Guess what they get for it? Just a yellow card!!! And even sometimes they just get a warning for that!!!

No wonder our national team often got cards on their international match.

Shame about it, though :(|||Manchester United

What does 'Association' in Association Football Refer To?

In an effort to try and define all the different codes of football, it occurred to me that I didn't know what 'Association' refers to (in Soccer/Football, depending on where you come from).

Any idea what the association was?|||The word Association was first used buy the English when they started on official football league in the 1800's. The term 'soccer' is actually an english term when they abbreviated Association football to Assoc. football and then to Soc Football and eventually shortened again to just soccer. By definition assosiation simply means 'an organization of people with a common purpose and having a formal structure'. So, basically when England put together a official competion, the football league became known as the Football Association.

What are all the different competitions within Association Football?

I'm starting to get into Association Football. I've been doing some research on wikipedia.org and so far I have learned that there are six confederations. There's a Confederation of Africa, Confederation of Asia, Confederation of Europe, Confederation of North, Central America, and the Caribbean, Confederation of Oceania, and Confederation of South America.

Within each confederation are nations. Each nation has its own Football Association that controls its own football clubs and national football team.

The only competition that I'm familiar with is the FIFA World Cup, which consists of 32 national football teams that compete during a four week period, which happens every four years.

So my question is, what are alll the different competitions within Association Football besides the FIFA World Cup?|||Well, there are continental competitions, too. In Europe there's the European Championship, called EURO, taking place every four years (in even years that have no World Cup). There are also the Asian Cup, the African Cup of Nations, the Copa America (South America), The Gold Cup (North America) and the Nations Cup (Oceania) happening around the same time. Winners of those competitions are entitled to play in the FIFA Confederations Cup, taking place in the year after the last continental competitions and before the next World Cup.

In the two years leading up to those competitions, every continental association determines the particpants of those tournaments by having all member states play a number of qualifiers. At the moment, for example, qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2010 is entering its final phase.

Club football has a more avid following, though, especially in Europe. Players "belong" to clubs and only play in the national team if they are called up. Every country has a league system and a variety of national cups. The best teams of each country are also eligible to play in continental club competitions like the Champions League and the Europa League in Europe and the Copa Libertadores in South America. There is also a lot of qualifying for this.

It's all very complicated to explain, really. Maybe it becomes a bit clearer if I explain it from a player's view. Let's take Steven Gerrard. He plays for Liverpool FC in England, and he is usually also called up to play for his country England's national side.

In a normal season, Steven will compete in the following competitions with Liverpool FC:

- Premier League (highest English club league)

- FA Cup (most important English cup competition)

- League Cup (second most important English cup competition)

- a couple of other small local cups if his team takes an interest

- Champions League (most important European competition)

Depending on how well his club did in the previous season, he might also participate with Liverpool in:

- The Community Shield (Premier League winner versus FA Cup winner)

- Champions League qualification

- Europa League (second most important European competition)

- Club World Cup (tournament of each continent's club competition winners)

With England, if called up, he will participate in:

- various friendly games so the team, made up of many different players from many different clubs, develops a sense of unity

- World Cup qualification

- the World Cup (if England qualify)

In Europe, a normal season goes from August/September to May/June. All those tournaments and competitions are usually all happening at the same time, hitting their crucial stages and coming to an end in May/June. For example, a team might play a league game on Saturday, a qualifier for the Champions League on Wednesday and an FA Cup game the Saturday after that. Only the World Cup and the other national team competitions are held in the summer after the league season.

I'm sorry for being so very confusing, maybe you should do a bit more wikipedia research at your own pace to try and make sense of it. Beware, though: once you get involved in this crap, you'll never be able to stop caring. ;-)
