I know Newcastle United Football Club play this at their games, but why? What is the association with the city?|||Actually, it appears that there's not that great a link between Newcastle and the song.
For one thing, Mark ISN'T a true Geordie, he's actually Glaswegian by birth (though his mother was a Geordie, his father was a Hungarian Jew) and only moved to Newcastle aged 9, while the tune comes from the film 'Local Hero' - shot entirely in Scotland.
