Lots of answerers from America refer to our beloved Association Football (I'm not going to call it soccer) and consider it soft when we play it wearing only shinpads for protection. What is soft is passing of girls sports as rough tough american games they play tag rugby as played by primary school (grade school) Kids but wear tons of armour and call it Football!!!!; they play a game called Baseball, again wearing armour which is just rounders again played by schoolgirls in primary schools, and Netball the main girls sport in schools but played by freakishly tall boys (because then they don't need to use skill to get a basket they just drop it in the net.). and then you have Hockey! I rest my case|||joke of the centuary ....
whoever told you americans could play football ??|||I played "Association Football" aka soccer in high school..and I'm a girl. What are you trying to prove?|||Because in the U.S., Association Football IS mostly played by kids and girls, ergo that's their perception. Same way that I, as a Scotsman, consider Cricket to be b-o-r-i-n-g !|||First of all, Fighting is legal in hockey so for that reason and many others (you can openly check people, with your whole body not just going after their feet) it is tougher than hockey. As for football, take a look the retired players, some can barely walk because of the hits they have taken, also a full body contact sport. As for the baseball, since when is whereing a helmet considered full body armor? Try standing up there and look at 90 mph fastballs going past you. Basketball may be the closest to soccer but they where NO pads at all, and take a look in the paint next time you watch an NBA game (not any of your European crap). Then tell me it is not tough. I am not saying that soccer isn't a tough sport but to compare it to hockey and football where the players are risking serious injury on every play (Kevin Everett in the NFL, Ryan Smyth yesterday in the NHL on a legal check.) is outrageous. Look you only where shin pads, but 90% of the game is played around your feet so it is almost the equivalent to full padding. All you soccer geeks stop saying the sport is as tough as football or hockey because it is not.|||It is what it is|||That's why the only Australian rules players who have ever even made an NFL roster are kickers. If anyone of you put on the pads and lined up for a single snap in an NFL game, you would get DESTROYED! When you're going over the middle to catch a pass and a 6' 3" (about 2 meters to you mate) 235 lb (about 17 stone to you, mate) who can run a 4.45 40 (that's really freakin' fast to you, mate) launches his body at you at full speed, you would get blown up. You wouldn't survive a week of practice let alone a game.
And it takes quite a bit of chutzpah to correct someone's spelling when you can't even identify a run on sentence.|||Soccer is a popular youth sport along with baseball, basketball, football. The problem with soccer is that there is no organization that promotes the positives of the sport in USA. Every single small town has a league ranging from kids to teenager. There are soccer teams in middle school, high school, university levels also. The major problem is that there is has never ever been a successful professional league in USA. The only time there has been any positive promotion for soccer is every 4 years when the Olypmics is around then everybody gets excited for a month then forgets about it just like all of the other fringe sports like Track %26amp; Field or Gymnastics.
MLS the pro league in USA barely gets any publicity at all. MLS isn't on tv at all that I know of so there is no reason why anybody would get excited about it. The supposely greatest player in the world BECKHAM got a huge contract but did absolutely NOTHING and played what 3 games the season he arrived.
Sorry but soccer will never ever be successful in America because it is behind 8 other sports that get regular promotion through the sport channels and commercial brand placement. Those sport leagues would be: MLB, NFL, NBA, NCAA, NASCAR, UFC, WWE, NHL. Soccer will stay a child's game until there is a corporate genius out there that knows how to run a professional soccer league. You will NEVER see a soccer fan wear a jersey of their favorite team in public. If they do it will most likely be of the Mexican league teams of Chivas or America. You will never see anybody wear MLS jerseys cause you can't find the products anywhere...and the perception that MLS stands for Minor League Soccer.
Keep on faking the injuries to get free kicks....roll around like you broke your ankle then get up 5 minutes later as if nothing ever happen :)
Freddie Adu did not save MLS, Beckham did not save MLS, nobody will ever make MLS successful. And yes I know Ronaldino and every player that only uses one name is better than Beckham. The only reason Becks and his wife the Spice Girl came to America was to attempt to become big time movies stars but apparently the papparazzi care more about fake blond popstars like Britney than some overrated celebrity from across the pond.
